NFL Week 2 Preview: Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts

The Denver Broncos hit the road for Week 2 looking to build on their season-opening win, while the Indianapolis Colts enter with momentum after an impressive offensive debut from quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones, in his first start with the Colts, delivered 270 passing yards, averaged more than nine yards per attempt and posted a 115 passer rating. He leaned heavily on wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie tight end Tyler Warren, who combined for 17 catches, 156 yards and a touchdown in last week’s win over Miami. The Colts also got a steady 71 rushing yards from Jonathan Taylor, whose presence helps balance Shane Steichen’s offense.

Denver, meanwhile, leans on its defense. The Broncos limited Tennessee to 12 points in Week 1, forced six sacks from six different players, and held quarterback Cam Ward to just 112 passing yards with no touchdowns. Cornerback Pat Surtain II and the secondary were equally stingy, keeping every Titans pass catcher under 30 yards.

That sets up a clash of strengths: a Colts offense brimming with confidence against what Denver hopes is the next iteration of the Orange Crush.

Nix seeks rebound

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix will need sharper play after a difficult debut. The former Oregon star threw for just 176 yards with one touchdown and three turnovers against the Giants, finishing with a passer rating of 60. While he spread completions to 11 different targets, only Courtland Sutton (six catches, 61 yards, one TD) and rookie Troy Franklin (44 yards) produced notable gains.

Nix’s mistakes were partially offset by Denver’s rushing attack. J.K. Dobbins scored in his team debut, and reserve rookie RG Harvey broke free for a 50-yard run en route to a 70-yard performance. The ground game will again be critical against an Indianapolis defense that intercepted Tua Tagovailoa twice last week and limited Miami’s passing attack to 114 yards.

Key matchups

  • Denver pass rush vs. Colts O-line: Jones was pressured only twice in 29 attempts against Miami, but the Broncos’ six-sack performance in Week 1 shows they can generate pressure from anywhere.
  • Jonathan Taylor vs. Broncos run defense: Denver bottled up Tennessee to 3.3 yards per carry, but Taylor remains one of the league’s most physical backs.
  • Bo Nix vs. Colts secondary: Indianapolis forced three turnovers and limited Miami’s top receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to 40 and 30 yards. Nix must protect the ball and find Sutton early.

History on the line

Denver won last season’s matchup, but Indianapolis has taken 13 of the last 19 meetings. The all-time series is tied, adding intrigue to Sunday’s rubber match at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Kickoff is set for Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, where the Broncos’ defense and the Colts’ rejuvenated offense will square off in one of Week 2’s most telling tests.
