LOCAL ROOTS, NFL DREAMS: FERGUSON & HELM SCHEDULED FOR PRE-DRAFT BRONCOS VISITS

With the 2024 NFL Draft just 15 days away, the Denver Broncos are setting the stage for their next wave of talent evaluation. Among the prospects scheduled for pre-draft visits are two familiar names with deep ties to the Centennial State: Terrance Ferguson and Gunnar Helm, a pair of tight ends who began their football journeys on Colorado high school fields.

Though Ferguson and Helm are not part of the Broncos’ official 30-player visit allotment due to their local status, they’re expected to meet with the team in the lead-up to the April 24-26 draft. These visits serve as an important opportunity—not just for the Broncos to gather in-person intel, but for both players to make a lasting impression on the team they grew up watching.

Terrance Ferguson: Heritage Star, Bo Nix’s Former Teammate

Ferguson, a standout at Heritage High School in Littleton, went on to become a key part of Oregon’s offense. A three-year starter for the Ducks, the 6-foot-5, 247-pound tight end averaged nearly 40 receptions and 465 yards per season, scoring 15 touchdowns during his college career.

He also shares a notable connection with Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix, having played two seasons with him in Eugene. Their on-field chemistry was on display in the Pac-12, and now the Broncos will have a chance to explore the possibility of a reunion—this time in Denver.

Gunnar Helm: Another Cherry Creek Product on the NFL Radar

Helm, a former Cherry Creek High School standout, followed a similar path from Colorado stardom to big-time college football. At the University of Texas, Helm carved out a productive role in the Longhorns’ passing attack. In his final year, he caught 60 passes for 786 yards and seven touchdowns, flashing a strong catch radius and solid route-running ability.

At 6-foot-5 and 241 pounds, Helm brings ideal size and a steady presence to the position—traits that could align well with Sean Payton’s tight end-friendly offense.

Broncos’ Pre-Draft Visit Strategy Coming Into Focus

Ferguson and Helm are part of a broader group of prospects the Broncos are evaluating in the final weeks before the draft. According to reports confirmed by Mike Kliss of 9NEWS, Denver has scheduled 15 of their 30 official pre-draft visits, spanning a variety of positions with an emphasis on offensive playmakers.

Among the most notable names:

  • Kaleb Johnson (RB, Iowa) – A physical back with 21 touchdowns last season and solid receiving ability.
  • Jaydon Blue (RB, Texas) – A speedy, versatile threat who impressed with a 4.25 Pro Day 40-yard dash.
  • Luther Burden III (WR, Missouri) – One of the most dynamic receivers in the class, with over 1,200 yards as a sophomore.
  • Cam Miller (QB, North Dakota State) – A dual-threat leader with 65 passing touchdowns and 40 rushing scores across three seasons.
  • Harold Fannin Jr. (TE, Bowling Green) – Had video game numbers in 2023 with 117 receptions and 1,555 yards.

The Broncos are also taking a close look at offensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive line prospects, reflecting a well-rounded approach to their draft board.

Looking Ahead

While not all scheduled visits lead to selections, the inclusion of Ferguson and Helm is a clear indication that the Broncos are paying attention to the talent in their own backyard. Both players have the college production, physical tools, and character to make an impact—and both would represent a unique hometown connection if they were to land in Denver.

As the Broncos continue to finalize their evaluations, the presence of two local standouts among their list of pre-draft visitors adds a personal dimension to their scouting process. And for Ferguson and Helm, the road to the NFL could come full circle—right back where it all began.
