BOULDER – In a thrilling start to their Big 12 Conference play, the Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team overcame a significant deficit to upset the 14th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers with a 65-60 victory on December 21, 2024, at the CU Events Center in Boulder, Colorado.
The Buffaloes, who trailed by as many as 16 points, mounted a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter. Frida Formann led the charge with 22 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Lior Garzon was instrumental in the final period, scoring 12 of her 14 points, including a personal nine-point run that shifted the momentum in Colorado’s favor. Freshman forward Jade Masogayo also contributed significantly with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Colorado’s offense was particularly efficient in the final quarter, converting 9 of 11 field goal attempts, which elevated their overall shooting percentage to 54.3% for the game. This offensive surge was complemented by a resilient defensive effort that limited West Virginia to 39.2% shooting from the field and 6-of-23 from three-point range.
West Virginia’s offense was spearheaded by Jordan Harrison, who scored 18 points, and JJ Quinerly, who added 16 points. Despite their contributions, the Mountaineers were unable to maintain their early advantage, succumbing to Colorado’s relentless second-half performance.
This victory improves Colorado’s season record to 10-2 and marks a promising beginning to their conference schedule. The Buffaloes will look to build on this momentum as they continue Big 12 play, aiming to secure a strong position in the conference standings.
