Buffs Showcase Offensive Depth in Convincing 83-53 Win Over CSUF

BOULDER – Colorado flexed its offensive prowess and depth in an 83-53 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night, improving to 3-0 this season. The Buffaloes used a combination of sharp shooting from long range and a balanced attack to build momentum in the second half, ultimately securing a comfortable win at the CU Events Center.

Initially, Colorado found itself in a close contest, leading by just six at halftime (35-29). However, the Buffs’ offense took charge in the second half, spurred by a decisive 16-6 run that stretched the lead to 20. Colorado maintained that dominance throughout, expanding their margin to as much as 30 points before the final buzzer. Their shooting efficiency was on full display, hitting 56.6% from the field (30-for-53) and 12 of 27 from beyond the arc—a season-best performance from three-point range.

Graduate transfer Andrej Jakimovski was particularly effective, matching his career-best with five 3-pointers en route to a 17-point night. His early shooting helped Colorado create separation, and he finished the first half with 14 points and four treys. Freshman Sebastian Rancik contributed 13 points off the bench, while Julian Hammond III added 11 points and a game-high four assists. Elijah Malone also provided valuable support with nine points and four rebounds, and Assane Diop led the team on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds.

“Tonight, our ball movement was much improved, and we kept the ball from sticking,” head coach Tad Boyle said. “Our 22 assists on 30 baskets reflect the unselfish play we’re aiming for, and I’ll take that every night.”

The Buffs’ defense was just as impactful, holding the Titans to 31% shooting from the field and a frigid 2-for-17 from three-point range. Colorado’s defense capitalized on Cal State Fullerton’s struggles, limiting them to just 18 total field goals. Donovan Oday was the only Titan to reach double figures, scoring 13 points.

Colorado’s rebounding and defensive efforts also played a crucial role, with the Buffs holding a 38-28 advantage on the boards. Diop’s contributions were notable—though he didn’t take a single shot, his team-high eight rebounds helped CU dominate when he was on the court, leading to a +25 point differential during his 19 minutes of play.

The Buffs came out of halftime with energy, building momentum with a quick 7-0 run that included a Malone layup, Jakimovski’s fifth 3-pointer, and an emphatic follow dunk from Malone. This gave Colorado a 42-29 lead and set the tone for the remainder of the game. With consistent contributions from the bench, CU extended its lead through the second half, as 11 different players saw double-digit minutes on the court.

“Our depth is our strength,” said Jakimovski. “We play hard in short bursts, sub in and out, and that allows us to stay fresh and give our maximum effort.”

Colorado’s defensive intensity, offensive ball movement, and deep rotation have set a strong foundation for the season. The Buffs continue to defend their home court in non-conference matchups, now boasting a remarkable 99-8 record at the CU Events Center under Boyle.

The Buffs will look to stay perfect on Sunday as they conclude their homestand against Harvard at noon. The game will be available on ESPN+.
