ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos continued their training camp on Day 8, focusing on red zone drills and player rotations. The session, held without pads, provided an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate players’ skills and decision-making in critical situations. The practice also included important updates on injured players and new roster additions.

Red Zone Drills and Quarterback Rotations

The primary focus of the day was on red zone scenarios, emphasizing the height and length advantages of the Broncos’ receiving corps. Head Coach Sean Payton expressed satisfaction with the day’s work, describing it as “fairly crisp.”

“It’s not only the red zone emphasis, but I thought overall it was good work,” Payton said. “I was pleased with the execution today.”

Payton also discussed the ongoing quarterback rotation. Both Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham took first-team reps, while Zach Wilson ran with the second team.

“It’s hard to rotate three through the first group,” Payton noted. “All three of them had a good day today. We’ll see how Saturday goes.”

He hinted at a different type of practice on Saturday, featuring special teams drills and “move the ball” scenarios.

Injury Update: Quinn Bailey and New Additions

A significant update came regarding offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, who suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle. Payton provided details on Bailey’s condition, stating that the main concern was the ankle injury, with surgery scheduled for next week.

“He dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibula,” Payton explained. “The main injury is the ankle. He’ll have surgery next week.”

In response to Bailey’s injury, the Broncos signed former Colorado State offensive lineman Oliver Jervis to bolster their depth.

“We signed Oliver Jervis to the roster,” Payton confirmed. “It’s a move to maintain a competitive offensive line unit.”

Defensive and Offensive Insights

The defense, particularly the linebackers and secondary, continued to fine-tune their schemes. Payton praised the competition in the back end and running back positions, highlighting the impressive performances of several players.

“I think we’re seeing great competition in the back end, at receiver, and at the running back position,” Payton said. “Javonte is down ten pounds… he looks like a completely different player.”

The day’s practice also featured intense one-on-one matchups, with notable battles between first-team Courtlands Sutton and Patrick Surtain II. These drills provided valuable insights into the players’ techniques and competitiveness, especially in the red zone.

“We saw some good battles in the one-on-one matchups,” Payton commented. “It’s crucial for evaluating both offensive and defensive players.”

Player Perspectives

Wide receiver Josh Reynolds discussed the depth and competition within the receiver room. He emphasized the benefits of having a group of players capable of making contested catches.

“It’s great to have T.P. back,” Reynolds said. “We have a deep receiving corps, and each player brings something unique.”

Reynolds also highlighted the value of working under the new coaching staff, which has brought a fresh perspective to the team’s offensive strategy.

Safety PJ Locke shared his thoughts on the defensive chemistry, particularly the seamless integration of new addition Brian Dawkins.

“We all play together in Texas, and Brian has been in the same defense,” Locke explained. “The communication factor is there, and now it’s about understanding where he’ll be in certain situations.”

Locke also reflected on the complexity of the safety position and the importance of making split-second decisions.

“You’ve got to be able to play in space, be the quarterback of the defense, and make split-second decisions,” Locke noted. “It’s a challenging role, but it’s crucial for the team’s success.”

Looking Ahead

As the Broncos approach their first preseason game, the team’s focus remains on refining techniques, building chemistry, and evaluating talent. Next Sunday, Broncos travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts. Stay tuned for more from inside Broncos training camp.
