Englewood, Colo. – Today, we attended a sunny 71°, Denver Broncos OTA practice at team headquarters. Another opportunity to see just how the team is coming together during the first week of OTA’s.
The Denver Broncos continued their offseason preparations with a significant OTA (Organized Team Activities) session, marking an essential phase in their journey toward the 2024 NFL season. These sessions are crucial for integrating new players, refining strategies, and building team cohesion.
Players were highly engaged, showcasing their skills and competing intensely. One of the standout moments included a spectacular catch by WR Tim Patrick, who looked fully recovered and ready to contribute significantly. TE Lucas Krull also turned heads with his sharp route running and reliable hands, prompting Coach Payton to remark, “Someday soon, they’re going to know who 85 is.”
The competition for the starting quarterback position was evident, with all contenders receiving equal opportunities. Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson, and Bo Nix each took turns running with the first team. Stidham showcased his consistency, while Wilson impressed with his live arm strength and quick adaptation to the offense. Nix, noted for his experience and intelligence, appeared comfortable and confident in his new environment.
“They come from different systems. One is coming from college. One is coming from two or three NFL systems, and the other is coming from one system. They’re all in a race to learn this system. I would say—you guys watched the practice—they’re doing well.”

Head Coach Sean Payton
Rookies and new players integrated smoothly with veterans, demonstrating their potential. Lucas Krull, in particular, stood out, as did WR Josh Reynolds, who displayed strong hands and excellent length, contributing to a highly competitive receiver group.
Notably, Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton was not at OTA’s once again. Sutton, after putting up 10 touchdowns on 90 receptions with 772 yards last season, is looking for a new deal to match his value. Who could blame him with this being is final year on his last deal and risk of injury being so high in the NFL?
Payton is obviously not worried; “There isn’t any concern. Here’s why: I know Courtland. He’s a tremendous worker. You guys know him. He has a tremendous makeup, leader of our team. That will sort itself out.”
After practice, Head Coach Sean Payton as well as others addressed the media, providing valuable insights into the team’s progress and individual player performances.
Payton confirmed the open competition for the starting quarterback role, stating, “We’re rotating all of them right now… We go by what we see.” This approach ensures that every quarterback gets ample opportunity to prove themselves.
If you ask us, Bo Nix is the starter. He just looks the part. The offense looks best when he is running it. However, Sean Payton is not tipping his hand as his philosophy on playing or sitting rookie quarterbacks, “…It’s really dependent on the roster.” Payton says.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham
highlighted the excitement and competitiveness of the quarterback room. Reflecting on his reaction to the team’s drafting of Bo Nix, he emphasized his determination to compete and win the starting job. Stidham also mentioned the importance of his experience helping younger quarterbacks and his increased comfort in the offense this year.
“It’s been fun. It’s been exciting having two new guys in the room. This is the first time I’ve been the [veteran] in the room, so that’s been fun and exciting.” – Jarrett Stidham
Quarterback Zach Wilson
Wilson, acquired in a trade with the Jets, spoke positively about the competition for the starting quarterback role, viewing it as an opportunity to bring out the best in everyone. He reflected on his experiences in New York, noting that challenging times have provided valuable lessons. Wilson aims to be consistent and efficient in practices, focusing on quick decision-making and utilizing the team’s playmakers.
“I need to be consistent every single day. Understanding the offense, understanding what I’m asked to do, taking care of the football and how quickly I can get the ball out of my hands to some of the playmakers that we have, too.” – Zach Wilson
Safety Brandon Jones
Free agent acquisition, S Brandon Jones (Dolphins) shared his experience transitioning to the Broncos. He noted the importance of connections with former Texas teammates Caden Sterns and P.J. Locke. He emphasized his goal to grow in every aspect of his game and praised DT Malcolm Roach’s vocal leadership and energy.
“I’m always looking for growth in every aspect of my game. Whether it’s blitzing, man coverage, playing high, anything.” – Brandon Jones
Wide Receiver Josh Reynolds
Another free agent pick-up, WR Josh Reynolds (Lions) expressed excitement about joining the Broncos, particularly under Head Coach Sean Payton. He acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to a new team, including learning the playbook and adapting to the altitude, but remains optimistic about his role and contributions.
“I think trying to figure out the plays. But at this point, I’ve been at a couple of teams, so a lot of it kind of carries over. Then, I would say the altitude. It’s been a little tough (laughter).” – Josh Reynolds.
